Ok, so I am a slacker at updating this lately--my apologies! We are still working on the front porch. We dug three holes in the ground-I believe 42 inches down in each one-and got the cement truck over to pour concrete in them. These have created footings and will stabilize the columns that will be installed at a later date. If we put only the columns in, without the concrete footings, they would have sunk in the ground over time and the porch would have sunk with it-as it has previously done.
The first hole we dug was on the left side of the porch--near the tree. Boy, did we have problems with tree roots! Not to mention the random bricks and cinder block buried in the ground. All were far down in the hole, so the drill wasn't going anywhere. After at least a couple hours on the hole, drilling, stopping, sawing roots, it was finished and the other two were a breeze.
Future: we will be taking out the ceiling of the porch and the decking (porch floor) and replacing both. Also, will be taking out the front steps and building new wooden ones about eight feet long. Have you noticed how much it has been dwindled and sawed down? Once we have a new deck, ceiling, and stairs, a railing will be put it and the three columns. Sounds so simple, right? And, of course, the blue wood siding will be covered with (hopefully) matching vinyl siding. :)
In the mean time, we need to get another dumpster to get rid of the debris from the porch...and I have some roofing estimates coming up.
